With direct-to-consumer digital downloads all the rage I thought I’d jump into the fray and offer up Senryu in a special digital collected-edition for anyone who likes to read comics on their iPad, iPhone, laptop or other PDF e-reader of choice.
That’s right kiddies, you can now get a beautiful high resolution digital copy Senryu, complete with extras for only $2.

The time seems right and with more creators offering up their work directly to their fans and consumers I thought it would be a good experiment to release Senryu this way and see what happened.

One of the main goals of our comic studio for 2011 is to have more of an impact in the digital world, and this will serve as somewhat of a test bed for that process.
I’ll let you know how it goes.

Staple! is one of my favorite comic-cons to attend. It’s local (a quick hop to Austin) and it’s always packed with awesome indie creators and fan willing to try new things. Plus it actually focuses on comics, and not the mass entertainment/movie/video game tie-ins that so many are in the business for these days. The entire Space-Gun crew will be in ustin this March for the
Fellow Space-Gunner Paul Milligan an I decided to do a short for inclusion in this years Staple! program book. It’s based on a rough concept by Jake Ekiss (another studio member) that proposed a series of shorts about the future’s hottest, toughest, space-fighting women. Think 50’s pinups and bomber art meet pulp adventure and futuristic sci-fi. So everything I love about comics and sci-fi basically.
Words and inks by me, with sweet-ass pencils by Paul.

These pages are unlettered, so be sure and come down to Staple! and pick up the program book if you want to get your introduction to our new heroine Joanne Foxtrot. They’ll be plenty more of her to come as 2011 rolls along.
Staple! is March 5th and 6th at the Marchesa Hall and Theater in Austin, TX. Go here for more info.

As is often the case when I’m under the gun with deadlines and other work madness I’ve been neglecting the blog. My last post was November 18th so it’s been a good 2 months of craziness with new gigs, deadlines, holidays, family matters and all other sorts of distractions.
They’ve mostly been the good kind of distractions, including a new contractor gig as Art Director for Idea-Loop, a web and mobile app dev shop born from the ashes of the original crew let go from Rockfish Interactive when the new management came in and cleaned house. Coupled with holidays, new work deadlines and some personal issues I’m just now getting caught up on the new year and at a place where I can post again.
One horribly bad distraction was the sudden and crippling near-deadline death of my beloved PC. Thankfully my data is all tripled archived, but with a looming deadline and no working machine I was more than frustrated. Thanks to a favor from a friend I managed to get the work done on a borrowed machine. I’ve since repaired the beast (it was a blown power supply) and setup a second, alternate workstation for emergencies consisting of an old laptop and Intuos 3 tablet.

The main setup with new 24 inch monitor.

The alt setup, for when something else dies.

With that taken care of I was able to meet the deadlines and get back up to speed on plans for the new year. Plans that so far include a trip to Austin for Staple!, another Dallas Comic Con or two and a Space-Gun Studios retreat coming up where we’ll be planning our world domination for 2011.
So hopefully I’ll be posting more art and design in the near future, and will be able to include some of the design projects I’ve been having to keep under warps, including some sweet iPhone and iPad apps.
So here’s to 2011 and its slow but steady start!

Update: Buy the giclee print here!
Thanks to my fellow Dallas-area artist Terry Parr I was recently inspired do a sexy pinup and decided to do a Tron 2 piece featuring Quorra. It took me a few days to get the colors right but I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out.
Detail shot below. Color holds abound!

While freelancing to pay the bills I’ve been hard at work on my first ever original graphic novel The Old Ones, and am happy to be posting the first update of my progress.
My good friend and Space-Gun Studio mate Jake Ekiss has been helping me refine the story and a few weeks ago we finished the final script for the first chapter. Below are the first 7 pages of blue lines, ruled and ready to ink.

I’ll be posting more updates as I complete pages and hit milestones, but won’t be posting any finished art until I’m well into the project. When the time comes we’ll be launching a proper stand-alone site to host The Old Ones as a once-weekly webcomic.
Follow me on Twitter and Facebook for random updates that don’t make the blog and you’ll be able to catch more of The Old Ones as it comes to life.

Worked up a Catwoman commission tonight after having a twitter convo regarding artists flaking out on commissions after taking their clients money. And make no mistake, patrons of your art are you clients.
Working as a freelancer in the advertising and web design world has taught me that timing is as important as quality. You’re held to your deadlines and if you miss them you don’t get future work, so I’ve had a long-held tradition of making sure I can meet the deadlines I commit to.
Now that doesn’t mean you should turn in shoddy work just so it’s on time, and there’s an easy way around that entire scenario: Don’t bite off more than you can chew. And if you’re an artist taking commissions and you have a backlog, man up and let your clients know what to expect, then they won’t badmouth you on twitter.
Having said all that I put my money were my mouth is and did this tonight for one ComixBookGurl. I hope she digs.

And here are the inks.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I have another deadline to meet.
