The term Giclée comes from the French word gicler which means “to squirt or spray”. First done in the early 1990's it is the use of ink jet printers to create high quality prints or “proofs”. Proofs were originally created on commercial printing machines designed to mimic the final multi-color process printing before mass production.
The anglicized “glicee” is now used to describe most high resolution, large format ink jet prints using fade resistant or pigment based inks. With the advent of printers using anywhere from five to twelve colors many artists and photographers use glicee as an alternative to mass production runs for limited editions or digital reproductions. |
